THE LEDGER (MADE UP).
Maple Court is three cul-de-sacs and a mailbox that still says “NO SOLICITORS.” This week a hedge fund nobody can find filed paperwork nobody asked for, betting that the lawns will lose.
The thesis, according to a deck that arrived by accident in our fax tray: if your neighbor stops mowing, property values fall, and someone in a glass office makes money. If your neighbor keeps mowing, they sell the other side of the trade and still make money. That is the product.
I called the number on the deck. A hold song played “Don’t Stop Believin’” on a xylophone. After eleven minutes a man said he was “not authorized to confirm Maple Court exists.” Maple Court exists. I drove there. There is a cat.
Positions we are pretending to report: long on leaf blowers, short on HOA civility, market-neutral on the guy who parks on the grass.
If this were real reporting it would be in Boyd’s Just the Facts. It isn’t. It’s the ledger. We made it up. The cat is real.
