“Eight seconds. My app took six minutes.”

“Twenty-two years in the tower. I took this job to relax.”

JUST THE FACTS. Augsburg’s Robin Fellhauer scored about 8 seconds into Saturday’s game against Bayern Munich (Oct. 10). Right after Bayern kicked off, he intercepted a heavy touch by Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer and scored. It is the fastest goal in Bundesliga history. FC Augsburg timed it at 8.4 seconds. The old record was 9. The game ended 2–2. Sources: AP; Bundesliga.com. Everything after this box is Dana’s problem.

Saturday, a man scored in eight seconds. I spent 22 years in a control tower. I never cleared anything that fast.

Here’s the replay. Bayern kicked off. Seconds later, their goalie, Manuel Neuer, had the ball. His touch was heavy. Augsburg’s Robin Fellhauer took it and scored. Eight seconds. Augsburg says 8.4. I respect a team that counts tenths.

The old record was nine seconds. So the record fell by about one second. In the tower, a second is a lot. At my house, it’s how long my TV takes to ask for a password.

I didn’t see it live. I was busy asking which app it’s on. See my flight log.

DANA’S FLIGHT LOG. 8 seconds the goal took. 3 apps the group chat said it’s on. 360 seconds my app took. 1 birthday I had to type in.

“Eight seconds. My app took six minutes.”

The game ended 2–2, so I saw some of it. Just not the part anyone will remember.

Our group chat’s live-bet guy was still typing “easy money” when the ball went in. He hasn’t typed since.

I’m not here to pile on a goalie. Everybody has a heavy touch. My problem is the machine around the game. The app. The password. The birthday.

Dana says she once held fourteen of something. She will not say what.

So I’m calling a ground stop. No kickoff until I’m logged in.

Management asked if eight seconds would make a good clip. It already is one.

Anyway.
